You are Free to Be: Digital Collage

At the core of my collage work is the exploration of Black Womanhood and Identity. Our culture: beauty, hair, sisterhood, the way we socialize and uplift each other, self care, and more. How we’ve moved through and pushed forward. We’ve always worked outside the home while working on ourselves and built our creativity within the margins to be part of building a culture that influences the world.

I am also impacted by imagery, films, music, I watched and experience growing up. This informs the central exploration of my collage work and how black women have established formulas, ways of not just existing but thriving in spite of what we’ve heard or been told. I remember wash days as a kid and I still use the practices my mother and grandmother taught me. I remember flipping through Essence Magazine, also Ebony and Jet to find beauty inspiration from women in whom I saw myself.

I also use my work to explore what it means to be a woman more broadly. In addition, I design unique imagery using elements of nature. As you will see, I love layering images, juxtaposing colors, and creating shapes.
